Inter- and intracontinental migration by the Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus)

چکیده

We recovered 12 archival geolocators deployed on Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus tyrannus) breeding in New York (NY; n = 3, 2 with years of data), Nebraska (NE; 6, 1 and Oregon (OR; 3) to describe migratory routes, timing rates migration, nonbreeding season distributions, connectedness. NY fall migrants migrated along the Atlantic coast Florida, flew either nonstop across Gulf Mexico (GoM; 3 birds) or stopped once way (Cuba Cayman Islands different years) land Yucatan/Central America. Fall birds from NE OR arrived at GoM region border between Texas Louisiana, most likely took a route Central In spring, all GoM, North America, more inland than fall. Trans-GoM flights were common among spring Birds faster fall, both seasons, late departure was associated rapid migration. Migratory connectivity low, OR, one bird each, occupied single northwestern Amazonia (southern Colombia, northern Peru, eastern Ecuador) while South Most kingbirds intratropical migrants, occupying regions for periods ≥30 d. The latter farther south western Brazil Bolivia, but then moved north later use same area where other remained throughout overwinter period. Northwestern thus appears be critical during season, possibly because prolonged wet supports abundant fruit resources.

Physical and nutritional properties of baby food containing menhaden oil (Brevoortia tyrannus) and microencapsulated menhaden oil

Purified menhaden oil (PMO) was characterized and microencapsulated. Baby foods containing PMO and microencapsulated purified menhaden oil (MPMO) were evaluated and compared. PMO had higher total omega-3, total saturated, total monounsaturated, DHA, and EPA contents than MPMO. Emulsion containing PMO (EPMO) exhibited viscoelastic characteristic and droplet size of EPMO was around 2e10 mm. The D...

Periodicity of increment formation in otoliths of overwintering postlarval and prejuvenile Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus

Hypotheses of fi shery recruitment pro cesses often have as their foundation studies of incremental otolith growth (e.g. Methot, 1983; Rice et al., 1987). Conclusions from these studies, however, are only as robust as their baseline otolith validation work. This is especially true for investigations on Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), an estuarine-dependent, marine-migratory clupeid ran...

High Frequency of Extra-Pair Paternity in Eastern Kingbirds

Genetic parentage in the socially monogamous and territorial Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus) was examined in a central New York population by multilocus DNA fingerprinting. Extra-pair young were identified in 60% (12 of 20) of nests. Of the 64 nestlings profiled, 42% were sired by extra-pair males, but no cases of conspecific brood parasitism were detected. These results are markedly diffe...

A molecular genetic investigation of the population structure of Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus)

Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) is an ecologically and economically important species along the U.S. East Coast. As a filter-feeder and key prey fish, it provides a critical link between primary production and larger piscivorous predators, such as striped bass (Morone saxatilis), bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix), and weakfish (Cynoscion regalis). The commercial fishery for Atlantic menhad...

SHORT COMMUNICATION Viable gut passage of cyanobacteria through the filter-feeding fish Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus

We examined the contents of the alimentary tract of juvenile Atlantic menhaden, an obligate filter-feeding fish, with epifluoresence microscopy. All plankton taxa and detrital material observed in plankton samples from the sampling area could also be found in the esophagus of the fish. The corresponding plankton taxa were absent from the pre-feces sampled in the hindgut with the exception of cy...
